I'm coming to the realization that I'm a lousy journal-keeper (and I'd make an even worse journalist, but that's another discussion entirely). This is not a good thing, as "writer" is how I self-identify more often than not, and it does seem that someone laboring under that title should, in fact, write more and better entries than I do. Every time I read a post from certain more-expressive members of my friends list, I am alternately humbled and mildly depressed. Excluding, of course, the real professional writers, who humble and depress me for entirely different reasons.

Here's the catch, I think: I also self-identify as an INTJ. And most of you who've been watching this-here train wreck for a while have figured out this: no matter how hard you try, I can't shake the insidious suspicion that most people don't really want me around and are only tolerating me out of socially-mandated politeness (or a business need, for some of you). So, between the innate introversion and the oft-unjustified sense of ostracism, I don't put a lot of effort into posting daily events that (a) I don't want to share and (b) I'm not sure you want to read. However, I feel a certain obligation to post something because that's what a blog is there for.

What this seems to produce is a disjointed collection of "ooh, shiny!" entries on subjects that interest me and aren't too personal, interspersed with the occasional irate rant that I don't think is likely to keep me from landing my next job. And I'm not sure that any of this is particularly interesting to my hypothetical audience, which only perpetuates my blogging demotivation.

Just venting. Feel no compulsion to comment.

Like the book meme, only with movies.
Bold the ones you've seen.
Put an asterisk after the movie title (*) if you really liked it.
Cross it out if you saw a film and really didn't like it.
Underline the ones you own.
Add one more to the list that you think should be on it.

Flood Stage: Three nights in July!
  anselm23

06:33pm 06/07/2008
For some reason, the Week in Poetry at the Poet's Asylum thinks tomorrow is the 2nd Monday in July.

So, for a special occasion, we'll hold Flood Stage tomorrow night, on the first Monday in July. Then we'll hold it again on the second Monday in July and then on the fourth Monday in July. We'll even have themes for the nights in July, to help encourage people.

So those dates again (and the themes) are:

• July 7 — Water
• July 14 — Liberty, Fraternity, Equality!
• July 28 — Harvest

Have fun, and see you tomorrow night, at

Victoria Station Café
in beautiful downtown Putnam, CT!

The Ventures Brothers is like the coolest show ever.

The Melbourne zoo is full of bogans.

I might try acupuncture myself one of these days.

It was a mistake to pack away all the headache medication before moving.

It's awesome when Brisbane people visit me down here. Especially when they're really ace Brisbane people.

Elf needs sleep badly.

100 Movies, #10: The Cave, directed by Bruce Hunt (2005)

If you like monster movies, you probably have times when you want something that's just plain reliable: a group of people get together someplace interesting and/or do something interesting, run into a monster, most get eaten, one or a few get away, and maybe there's a twist at the end. It's desirable that no element in this mix be actively bad, and it's nice if some part is actively good.

Well, The Cave is that kind of movie.

The setting is select portions of a large cave system in the Carpathians, a nicely exotic sort of locale (along with a good teaser look at underwater caves in the Caribbean). The actively good part of this movie is its cave photography, and particularly the underwater cave photography. It is a marvel of textures, shapes, and colors that simply don't occur on the surface, rendered in gorgeous clarity. The characters are archeologists and cave divers exploring this. The monster is typical cinematic riffing on some bits and pieces of real cave biology, all ramped up. The monster is designed by Patrick Tatopoulos, and looks pretty good in its various forms - certainly not the best I've ever seen, but serviceable.

It's worth a look if you like cave photography and don't mind the rest, pretty much. I had fun.

For once the crew at Something Awful have come up with an entire collection of unnecessary ads that are pretty much all funny, and also all safe to show Mom. Some quite good laughs in here, with ads for existence, depth, fire, and the like.

mood: sore
Last Sunday my back started spasming. My mid-back, not where you usually expect back pain. It got better after a few days, but I was still thinking a massage was in order. So, the therapist touched my back and confirmed those were some big knots in there. She spent a lot of time on the back itself. It was when she started on other areas that it became clear that I am carrying way too much stress. Every area she touched was a huge knot. Feet, hands, legs, arms, shoulders; I could even feel it when she was relieving tension in my scalp. It's pretty clear I started to cramp in my mid back just because there weren't other muscle groups to tighten up. It's six and a half hours from when the massage ended, and the parts of my back where she focused are still noticeably radiating heat.

So, yeah, renewed focus on stress relief might be in order.

For those of you who don't also follow my wife's LJ, she's started a series of posts on investor education. If you're like me and don't have frickin' clue how the modern economy works outside your own bank accounts, I strongly encourage you to go take a look. Srsly. This is 101-level stuff that, while not the reason I married her, is insanely valuable.

Any Melbourne readers need a fridge? For free? I'm not taking it with me to N.'s when I move, and the former flatmates don't need it, so I figure I need to find it a new home.

If you're in need of something to keep your beer cold, have access to a van or ute for moving it, and don't mind the fact that it wobbles slightly and is plastered with a few lefty-type stickers, drop me a line.
